The Domestic Terminal Building Upgrade at Auckland International Airport is a prime example of Naylor Love delivering a complex project in a security-focused environment without disruption to airport operations.
The project involved building and fitting out a new regional lounge, two new air-bridges, larger gate lounges, office and admin areas, baggage collection areas and toilets and a centralised security screening area, extending capacity for both Air New Zealand and Jet Star passengers. The scope of works also included a full seismic upgrade to the current building landside and airside, with additional steel framing and bracing to column and beam junctions throughout the terminal.
When working and managing subcontractors both landside and airside in close proximity to aircraft, both security and site housekeeping are significant considerations. Naylor Love managed this by establishing and overseeing strict protocols, and by considered selection of key subcontractors who had experience working in an airport environment.
Careful consideration of methodology and management of logistics, and meticulous planning with AIAL and Air New Zealand Operations, meant that the works could be carried out during the airport’s operational hours and during passenger movements, without disruption to aircraft scheduling – a particularly impressive achievement given that more than 300 flights were being processed daily.
