DCC waste minimisation case study
Dunedin City Council was so pleased with our waste minimisation efforts during the Civic Centre refurbishment that they published a case study!
During the demolition phase on level 2 alone, we managed to divert over 90% of the waste by weight every month, smashing our 70% target.
We took a practical, hands-on approach, reusing, repurposing and recycling materials wherever possible. And when we say hands-on, we mean it – with no vehicle access to site, everything needed to be carried out through lifts and stairwells shared with other building users, then down a narrow alleyway shared with the public.
From recycling metals and glass to repurposing cabinetry, timber and carpet tiles, the project showcased how we can turn waste into both social and economic value. It’s a great example of how we’re continuing to learn, improve and deliver more sustainable outcomes for our clients and communities.
