Careful delivery in a sensitive surgical environment.
Naylor Love built a two-storey extension at Christchurch Eye Surgery’s specialist hospital on Papanui Road. The expansion includes two new operating theatres and recovery areas, a staff room, offices, lift, reception and a secondary plantroom, plus a new car park.
Set on concrete foundations, the structure comprises structural steel, precast panels and rib-and-infill flooring. Significant services integration connects the new clinical spaces and secondary plantroom with the existing hospital, while cedar and metal cladding helps the extension sit naturally alongside the original building.
We were working within three metres of a live operating theatre, so maintaining a controlled construction environment was critical. Through strong planning, clear communication and close coordination with the Christchurch Eye Surgery team, we managed vibration, noise, dust and odour while delicate eye surgeries continued next door. Our team also carefully staged the new administration areas around the live reception, using sequenced day and night shifts to bring the new reception online while safely deconstructing the old space.
Delivered on programme and within budget, the extension has attracted positive feedback for its quality finish, seamless integration and careful delivery in a sensitive surgical environment.
