Complex integration of an existing pool into a new leisure facility.

Our two-storey extension of Huia Pool added two new pools to the existing complex, plus a 400m² gymnasium, offices and amenity areas for staff, changing facilities and a plant room.

The new pools are made from stainless-steel wall panels with a welded vinyl floor, all resting on a 500mm thick raft slab. This slab was poured in one day with over 100 concrete truck deliveries operating a shuttle service from 5am through to mid-afternoon.

Some of the challenges involved in integrating the old and new pools were repairing and maintaining the vapour barrier, adjusting ceiling heights, and switching over services control systems. This complex integration required our team to work some long hours, but resulted in a seamless transition between the old and new buildings.

The existing pools remained in full use throughout the building process. This involved a high level of traffic management, route diversion, hoardings, deliveries management and pedestrian management to ensure the facility was safe for both the staff and for the public. We maintained continuous, daily communication with the client and pool staff, monitoring the controls and adapting to changes.

We worked closely with the Council to monitor costs, and successfully brought the project in under budget. A highly complex and coordinated integration of an existing pool into a new pool and fitness facility, Huia Pool + Fitness will be a huge asset to the local community for many years to come.
