Logan Park High School maths block

Our Dunedin Projects & Interiors team replaced a classroom block at Logan Park High School in a lightning-fast build. The original maths block had reached the end of its serviceable life and was identified as mould affected.

Enabling works included full demolition of the old block using an excavator and misting machines due to the extensive mould throughout the building. We also cleared asbestos contaminated areas in adjacent buildings we were running services through and re-routed the heating for other parts of the school.

Both our buildability and BIM expertise came in handy during the build. We identified a faster, safer way to fill in an area of the existing floor slab where a set of stairs was removed, using Comflor instead of a precast flat slab and topping slab. Our BIM team modelled the large concrete stairs over the terrace, reducing the excavation required, then conducted a pre-pour stair level survey to guarantee a millimetre-perfect, high-quality result.

We maximised waste diversion, donating scrap metal back to the school, where it is either used in metalwork classes or sold for scrap. The old steel balustrades found a second life as farm gates. Suitable timber offcuts were bagged up for the school community to use for firewood, and our team poured a concrete slab for a new shed using leftover pours.

Safety in the school environment remained paramount throughout the project, with site access carefully controlled. We delivered the new block right on time in a compressed eight-month programme, requiring careful staging, proactive risk management and close engagement with the school.
