Hospital delivered efficiently with in-house specialist input.

We built a new three-storey hospital with car parking on the Southern Cross Wellington Campus. Initially engaged for the base build, we also incorporated a substantial fitout package for an 800sqm orthopaedic surgical centre with two operating theatres, a five-bed Post Anaesthetic Care Unit and a five-chair day-stay lounge.

We encountered several challenges during the build, including changes to the piling methodology, a revised seismic design, and incorporating complex design details into the construction sequencing. We worked collaboratively with design consultants and client to overcome these obstacles, proactively providing cost effective solutions, including sequencing efficiencies that allowed us to hand over the building eight weeks ahead of schedule.

The coordination of the numerous in-ceiling medical services required precise procurement and spatial planning. This was enhanced with a detailed BIM model, with our in-house BIM and Services teams working together to expand significantly on the design model to align it with the seismic and fire engineering solutions. Our BIM Execution Plan was adhered to throughout the project, with all services trades modelling their trades for coordination with our federated model.

With the site adjacent to the existing Southern Cross Hospital Wellington and in a residential area, we were careful to keep the neighbours informed. The entire site team pulled together to deliver various sustainability, waste management, training and workforce engagement initiatives to support the application for a 4 Star Green Star as-built rating.
