Meticulous planning, agility and innovative methodology.

After completing the first three stages of ACP panel replacement at Te Papa in 2017, we returned in 2023 for the fourth stage – replacing the aluminium composite panels on the rooftop plant room façade and south gallery.

The project underwent significant design evolution, transitioning from non-consented works to a scope that was submitted for council consent. This shift required an agile response from our project team, including documentation updates, compliance reviews, and coordination with consultants to meet regulatory requirements.

With the building services and mechanical equipment housed in the plant room playing a critical role in maintaining the environment necessary to protect museum’s precious collections, we were very aware of the risk of shutdowns. We sequenced the works meticulously and introduced temporary protection measures to maintain the plant operations without interruption.

Our team opted to use a crane to deliver materials to and from the roof instead of using the more traditional approach of installing a fixed hoist onto the façade. This was better for site security, reduced the impact on the building envelope, made material handling more flexible and efficient, and minimised disruption to the surrounding area.

Given the nature of the works in the gusty harbourside location, preventing debris from falling or being blown off the roof was a top priority. We implemented robust safety protocols, including exclusion zones, debris netting, and regular site inspections to mitigate the risks.

Though largely out of sight and indistinguishable from the original panels, the façade upgrades will keep the museum weathertight and reduce maintenance for years to come.
