Tired library transformed into an award-winning contemporary workspace.
We refurbished the third floor of the Science Library at the University of Otago’s Science III building as the new Science Divisional Office. The fitout includes a reception area, an open plan office with space for 36 workers, two enclosed offices, a boardroom, meeting rooms, kitchen/break room and bathrooms. We also refurbished the stairwell up to the offices and upgraded the services to suit the new configuration.
One of the client’s goals was to express a strong cultural narrative in the fitout. Custom window manifestations, artworks and beautifully crafted timber fittings reflect Kāi Tahu raraka mātauraka (traditional weaving knowledge), with ceiling battens formed from fire-rated MDF wrapped in rimu veneer used to make a feature of the exposed ceiling.
With beautifully executed architectural finishes and intricate matauranga Māori elements, we were delighted that the project won an Interior Architecture award at the 2023 NZIA Southern Architecture Awards.
