A highly collaborative project in a challenging live airport environment.

As part of a major upgrade and expansion programme, Naylor Love were contracted to complete a single level fitout for the international departures screening area within the existing terminal building at Wellington International Airport.

The project grew to incorporate an upgrade of the main switchboard room, additional hoardings in the terminal for the Aviation Security Service, and work on the north wall of the new Rydges Hotel.

This project proved to be highly collaborative in terms of solving the challenges presented by the space, the live airport environment and Covid-19. One of the challenges we encountered was installing seismic joints and bracing across several buildings, working in tight spaces to strengthen and prop the existing structures from below. We uncovered issues along the way that required design changes, with a team approach from WIAL, Naylor Love and the design team used to come up with solutions.

The area was also pressed into use to separate passengers at times during the Covid-19 pandemic. We worked closely with WIAL to accommodate their requirements, adjusting hoardings and rescheduling work at short notice as alert levels changed.

The success of this project both relied upon and strengthened the close working relationship between WIAL and Naylor Love.
