The Remarkables base building extension

Naylor Love extended the existing base building at The Remarkables Ski Area by enclosing the western side of the deck to extend the café/dining area, the second of two projects we completed over the off-season in 2025-26. Works included demolition of the existing wall structure along one side of the building, slab alterations, new concrete upstands, roofing extensions, the integration of building services and fitout of the new area.

We collaborated closely with the client and design team from the outset under a negotiated ECI model, drawing on input from people who had worked on the original structure as we helped to manage the complex interfaces with the existing base building. One key outcome was the decision to design out hot works by using a bolted structure instead of a welded one, removing the need for on-site welding. Early engagement also supported smarter decisions around sequencing, access, weather exposure and long-lead procurement, with prefabrication favoured over in-situ work to suit the remote alpine environment.

Throughout the project, our team management the work under a rigorous health and safety plan that addressed the alpine environment, work at height, restricted access and extreme weather, including high winds, snow, ice and freezing conditions.

Sustainability was a strong feature of the build, with around 80% of construction waste diverted from landfill and material reuse central to the approach.

The programme was protected at every milestone through careful planning and proactive mitigation. We delivered on time and on budget across an October to May window, meeting every key milestone despite significant early snowfall in April.
