Smarter construction is delivering measurable waste reductions at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison.
Across the country, we’re focused on finding smarter ways to reduce waste and create value from materials that might otherwise end up in landfill.
With a construction approach centred around precast concrete and prefabricated steel modules, our ACP project at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison has created opportunities to reduce waste through offsite manufacturing, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), and careful site waste management.
So far, 75% of project waste has been diverted from landfill, creating only 4.3kg of waste per square metre, while the team has also used reduced-carbon concrete across all pumped raft slab pours and precast slabs brought to site.
Recently, Wellington Environmental Manager Grant Hawthorne shared some of these learnings with the Hawke’s Bay Building Resource Recovery Collective, highlighting the waste minimisation initiatives being delivered on site; made possible thanks to support from local experts such as Geoff Gibson, and a wide range of waste diversion opportunities in the region.
We’re always keen to share ideas, learn from others, and work alongside local businesses and councils to help drive more sustainable outcomes across the construction industry.
